History of the House

El Recés is a large Catalan village house, with different areas dating back to the 14th, 15th and 17th centuries. It  was originally two houses; the earliest part is at the back, on Plaçà Rebot, overlooked by the last remaining section of the medieval village wall. Narrow streets lead off this plaçà, which are accessible only by foot.  An old well has now become integrated into a guest bathroom of the house.

The front house on Carrer Major has a balcony door stone with the date 1732.  Close to the front door we have an archway, the Portal Santa Maria, this is the old village gate with a passage way through to the Plaçà Rebot.  For many centuries the house had traditional rural uses; the cattle housed on the ground floor, while the top floor was a grain store.

In more recent years, El Recés became a holiday home for the German artist and sculptor, Horst Heller.  The ground floor was an art gallery 'Joclars' and the top floor, with good light from the arch windows, was Horst's studio. This is now a guest lounge, but we still refer to it a the 'studio'.

El Recés is a special house and we have been very conscious during renovation not to change the structure or character of the building. We have kept the rooms large and all have natural stone.  Former residents have very special feelings for the house. Horst bought El Recés as an anniversary present for his wife Irmin 30 years ago and spent several years carefully restoring the more ruined parts. They have since been back to visit and now refer to it as 'our hotel' so they must approve!  Another guest was Catalan lady who was born and brought up in the front house. For a special anniversary, she stayed in the room she was born in.

We opened El Reces as a guest house in 2003 and that's the story so far........
